Towards Sustainable Philanthropy - Loving Your Donors the Philanthropic Psychology Way
Presented by Adrian Sargeant
This session will track the evolution of relationship fundraising explore what we can learn from the science of how human beings form relationships to inform how we might build stronger, loving and more fulfilling relationships with our supporters. Many organizations claim to be practising relationship fundraising, but in reality there is little agreement about what that actually means and what might constitute a relationship approach. We'll look at the concepts of identity, wellbeing, and love and how they can be leveraged to quite literally double your income. We'll share with you our experimental testing and show you many examples of how organizations around the world have put our ideas and Phil Psych into practice.

Learning To Speak about Love in Fundraising: New Research from 2024
Presented by Prof. Jen Shang
Prof. Jen Shang will present the findings of a major new research project that reveals a powerful way of deepening the relationship between donors and charities. The language used in fundraising communications has a profound effect on how donors view themselves and their capacity to give. Prof. Shang’s research minimizes the guesswork and provides data-backed ways to communicate with donors, from the supporter making their first donation to the “lifer” who is contemplating a legacy gift.
Prof. Shang will present the latest research conducted by the Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy, showing that the quality and longevity of charities’ relationship with donors suffers when the focus is solely on money or the impact that the donors’ money will have on the charities’ worthy causes. Prof. Shang will introduce a new paradigm emphasizing that love – mutual, genuine care between the charity and the donor -- is at the core of the decision to donate and should be central to how charities communicate with donors about philanthropy. In this presentation, Prof. Shang will explore how charities can use this framework to re-think and re-design their communications with donors regarding outright and legacy giving.
